Wye Valley & Brecon Beacons

Discover the Wye Valley & Brecon Beacons. This is the land where King Arthur ruled, the Romans bathed, the Normans settled, pilgrims worshipped and Turner sketched. Today it offers dramatic landscapes and nature trails, as well as great food. Explore the ancient Roman Fortress of Isca, established in 74AD and referred to in ancient texts as the Court of King Arthur and his Camelot. Abergavenny, Monmouth and Usk are unique places, towns touched by modernity but still retain an distinctive sense of historical character. We could stop by the magical Dewstow Gardens or the artist’s paradise of Tintern Abbey, which famously inspired the poems of William Wordsworth and the paintings of JMW Turner.

The afternoon will take us past high grasslands, fast flowing rivers and glorious landscapes as we explore the Beacons many peaks by foot or car and take in the northern rim with its glacier-worn hollows, glacial lakes and spectacular waterfalls. The four mountain ranges within the park include the highest peak in South Wales, Pen-y-Fan so you are guaranteed fabulous hillwalking and photography opportunities. Rolling green landscapes? Waterfalls? Characterful towns and a tranquil canal? They’re all here, the Brecon Beacons are unknown paradise of adventure.

Also on offer is a chance to discover Wales’s rich mining heritage at the Big Pit Museum, where you’ll experience the sights, sounds, smells of an authentic coal mine or, for the less adventurous there’s the Penderyn Distillery, the only commercial whisky distillery in Wales where, of course, tasting the whisky will be a high point.
